                              CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
   DAY 1 (3/28):
                  Southern Appalachian Folk Medicine:
                       An Elemental Approach:

~~Fire, Water, Air and Earth.....These elements come together in a magical dance of genetics and environment to help create each of our unique and individual traits. What are your elemental influences and what exactly does that mean anyway?
~~Understanding your elemental makeup is useful for a variety of reasons. Knowing your elements can help guide your healthcare choices and be used to improve your health. Knowing your elements can bring awareness of potential relationship issues or which elements or combination of elements might be more compatible with you. Knowing your elements can help bring awareness of why you make the decisions that you make.
~~In Southern Folk Medicine, we are composed of all four elements - fire, earth, air and water –  but in different ratios. Join Phyllis D. Light, renowned teacher, author, and herbalist, in a journey to discover your elemental makeup and ratios and how you can use this in your life. And who knows, we might just take a few minutes to dance the elements!

DAY 2 (3/29):
                        The Thyroid/Adrenal Connection:

~~How do we get back our groove? Did you use to feel full of energy and verve but now wonder where it’s gone? How you worked on your thyroid and adrenal glands with herbs but things didn’t really change? We really have to look at the whole system, the endocrine system that is, for healing and in particular...the thyroid/adrenal connection. If you were diagnosed with hypothyroidism after a traumatic or stressful event such as pregnancy, accident, infection or an emotional trauma, you may also have adrenal fatigue. If you were diagnosed with adrenal fatigue or exhaustion, you may also have a poorly operating thyroid. These two glands are intricately connected through the endocrine system. When they aren’t working in sync, other glands may also be effected such as the reproductive system and blood sugar response.
~~In this class, Phyllis will discuss the difference and similarities between hypothyroidism and adrenal fatigue and how symptoms of each may mimic the other. We’ll talk about herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, special diets, and mind/body techniques that help bring the body back into balance and begin healing our endocrine systems.

                     BONUS CLASS ON FRIDAY 3/27:
Epigenetics & Methylation: The Influence of our Ancestors:

~~Let’s wrap our brains around this concept for a moment: Epigenetic tags on our DNA do not change our underlying genes but those tags can be inherited. Wow! This means the traumas experienced by our parents and grandparents, their nutritional level, any environmental toxic exposures, stress and lifestyle issues they experienced could have created epigenetic tags on their DNA which were potentially inherited by us. And by the same reasoning, we may be passing them to our children and grandchildren also.
~~Methylation and the release of neurotransmitters affects which tags we lay down and pass on. Research has found that methylation and it’s effect on epigenetics plays a role in autoimmune diseases, cancer, mental health issues, and sometimes.... even why we make the decisions we make in life. ~~Join Phyllis for a discussion and understanding of epigenetics and ways that herbs, foods, and lifestyle choices can affect methylation, release tags, and change, not only our lives, but those of our children and grandchildren. We can change this!!!!!!
